Baumgartl joined Siemens AG in Munich, Germany, in July 1986, where he held management positions in the Defense Electronics Group until late 1993. He then transitioned into the Mobile Networks business unit of Siemens, helping the company succeed in the Scandinavian market.

Baumgartl came to the United States in March 1997, where he took on progressively larger roles, ultimately assuming leadership of all Siemens wireless infrastructure, mobile phones and wireless modules business for the North American wireless communications market. Since September 2005, he has been Chief Operating Officer for Siemens Communications Inc.
