Identifying Good Leadership Talent

Abstract

As a CEO, one of your biggest challenges is identifying others with real leadership capability to manage and motivate the teams throughout your organisation. This can be far more difficult than it sounds. Some leadership characteristics that appear to be desirable, such as confidence, can easily be feigned and the effect of the feigned self-confident leader can be substantially negative. How can you minimise these undesirable characteristics in your teams?

Brent Smith, associate professor of organisational behaviour at London Business School, has conducted significant research in this area and argues the need for coaching at all levels, in order to recognise and eliminate undesirable leadership capabilities, and get the optimum performance.
