Home Versus Office: The Benefits and Challenges of Home Working

At a time when companies are trying to reduce costs and improve efficiency, offering employees the opportunity to work from home is an attractive option.

Some employers are even allowing their employees to choose their own laptops and phones, within agreed limits and criteria, thereby reducing the load on IT departments and allowing staff to have some independence.

And cloud technologies and other collaborative working systems such as Podio allow staff to interact and access data in more cost effective ways, from almost anywhere, provided there is a good internet connection.

Clearly there are advantages to both employers and employees in taking this step, but does it work for everyone? In the past, some people worked from home one or two days a week, but now many smaller companies have their staff based at home all the time.

Obviously there are many roles where home working is not practical, and never will be, but what are the benefits and advantages of adopting home working, and what are the challenges and costs?
