VERITAS: Business Continuity Management Programme and Optimised Server Resources

Discover how VERITAS Consulting (now from Symantec) worked with two major clients to implement a business continuity management programme and optimise server resources.

AMLIN IMPLEMENTS BUSINESS CONTINUITY MANAGEMENT WITH VERITAS

The events of 9/11 and 7/7 focused minds on the fact that business continuity is not only associated with viruses and earthquakes. As one of the leading insurance and reinsurance companies operating in the Lloyd's market in the City of London, Amlin needs to ensure its business continuity and disaster recovery strategy adheres to the most rigorous guidelines. That applies not only to technology, but also facilities, communications, people, infrastructures, and business processes.

Working closely with VERITAS Consulting (now from Symantec), the company has implemented a business continuity programme and situation (crisis) capability that meets the British Standards Institute (BSI) PAS56 – the framework for best practice business continuity management. The terrorist attacks in London on 7 July 2005 validated the effectiveness of their programme.

‘VERITAS Consulting was the ideal partner to assist Amlin in implementing a best practice PAS56 framework. As a company, no one knows more about business continuity, and no one has more experience in implementing business continuity programmes.’ David Harris, group operations director, Amlin.

RAPID SERVER DEPLOYMENT FOR CREDIT SUISSE GROUP

With business-critical applications residing on more than 1000 Sun UNIX-based servers, server, provisioning was a time-consuming endeavour for Credit Suisse Group. The problem was particularly acute for the development and engineering environment, with provisioning taking as long as a couple hours. Leveraging VERITAS OpForce™ software from Symantec, the global financial services leader reduced server provisioning to 30 minutes, thereby enabling faster roll out of new software releases and time to market for new application services.

‘We estimate that we have received a very rapid return on our investment in VERITAS OpForce. And over the course of each development regression cycle, it will pay for itself again and again.’ - Werner Fäh Senior Systems Engineer Credit Suisse Group.

The end-to-end solution provides rapid server deployment by discovering new servers in a bare metal state and loads a snapshot of a complete and fully configured server in minutes. The unique in-context provisioning capability locks down each server setting in relation to its surrounding devices. This also enables Credit Suisse to create server templates containing specific profiles and apply them to a group of servers.
